Rodilas v Samare, žila v Leningrade, učilas na filologičeskom fakultete v Institute im. Gercena. V 1989 godu ėmigrirovala. S 1990 goda žila v Siėtle, SŠA, gde rastila četyrech detej, učilas v aspiranture i prepodavala v Vašingtonskom universitete. V 2005 godu zaščitila dissertaciju ob Arsenii Tarkovskom. S 2013 goda živet v Nju-Jorke, SŠA.
